I know, I’ve Been Neglecting You…but here is your First Friday & Awesome Free Events Line-up for September 4-6!

Dearest Fabulous Readers,

I know I’ve been neglecting you of late, and for that I apologize. The main reason is I just returned from that big crazy arts festival in the desert where we burn things, otherwise known as Burning Man. I brought my Black Rock Portrait Project out there once again, and the prep work for that and for the trip itself was hugely time-consuming, among other things. But I’m back! And here with your September First Friday line-up and awesome Free stuff to do this weekend…

My Favorite Pic for the Weekend…Saturday’s TOUR DE FAT Free Freaky Adult Fun in the Park (City Park that is) with live music, games, and bikes bikes bikes. Bike ride registration is at 10am, the fun in the park rolls all day long. See the full schedule HERE.

Saturday is the monthly Free Day at the Denver Art Museum

I know it’s not technically on the weekend, but Monday is a Free Day at the Museum of Nature & Science.

September is a BIG First Friday night in Denver! The Arts Districts will be in full swing tonight. The weather is cool, so break out your favorite Fall sweater and boots and go see some art tonight. Here is the First Friday line-up courtesy of Denverarts.org…

An Industrial Found-Object Garden Delights! More Fun Ideas to Steal for Your Garden…

sabingarden10

Deep in the Heart of the industrial Rino Arts District lurks a little Secret Garden full of recycled wonder. The immensely talented artist duo Sabin Aell and Randy Rushton took a run-down industrial factory space and transformed it into something Ultra-Cool. The building now houses not only Sabin and Randy, but the art gallery Hinterland, assorted artist work spaces, and a very large wood and metal shop where Randy creates beautiful furniture and fixtures from recycled and reclaimed materials. (Custom by Rushton) The inside of the space is killer, but I will make you wait to see it until another time. This post is all about the funky little garden they have created out behind the building…

It should come as no surprise that this little garden, carved out of what was a dirt parking area, is all about recycled and found objects. Everything here was reclaimed. Watch for clever use of materials…

sabingarden12_edited-1 sabingarden15

Just outside Randy’s shop area is this interesting assortment of metal bits and funky odds and ends, lovingly curated and placed. When in doubt, let it rust! I do dig the patina…Note the gorgeous planter on the left. One of Randy’s creations of course.

sabingarden14 sabingarden18 sabingarden19sabingarden17sabingarden13

Moving on to the main garden area, we find hidden creatures, interesting pots from tree stumps (great idea!), old metal containers as pedestals, driftwood and other fascinating found objects.

sabingarden10 sabingarden9 sabingarden6 sabingarden5

Love the half-doll, going head first down the planed stump. Very Alice-in-Wonderland.

sabingarden20 sabingarden4 sabingarden21

The little robot under the table is delightful.

Almost everything in the seating area was found or salvaged. A no-cost garden is possible!

sabingarden22 sabingarden23

sabingarden11sabingarden2

Probably my favorite thing in the garden. Old fry baskets as planters.

sabingarden24 sabingarden1 sabingarden25

And last but not least, another one of Randy’s lovely planters.

I had a blast exploring Randy and Sabin’s garden, I hope you did too. I promise to blog about the inside of their amazing space soon.

Thank you Sabin and Randy!

Ah Thursday. With the weekend just around the corner, I can feel Denver pulses quicken in anticipation…

FRIDAY

On Friday there is a FREE public concert at the Clifford Still Museum downtown featuring ATOMGA (sponsored by Swallow Hill Music) from 5:30pm-7:30pm, and museum admission is FREE 5-8pm! Clifford Still Museum

SATURDAY

My top pick for this weekend is the Art Student’s League of Denver Summer Art Market  on Saturday. I haven’t missed one in a decade now. A marvelous mix of student, faculty, and professional artists selling their wares in a relaxed atmosphere. Looking for new art for your home? There are tons of great art bargains to be had here! (maybe Dad would like a little something cool for Father’s Day, this is the place to get it) Hint: I always arrive right when they open (10am), as parking can get difficult, and it will be a hot day. And of course, it’s FREE! (it is also on Sunday)

If you’re into Bluegrass, the South Pearl Street Brew Grass Festival is for you. It begins at Noon on Saturday. While it is not free, it is only $5 for 8 live bands in a quaint neighborhood setting. http://www.southpearlstreet.com/events.html#music

Also on Saturday is the 9th Annual Downtown Littleton Block Party, another fun FREE event, there’s even fireworks! http://www.downtownlittleton.com/

SUNDAY

On Sunday there’s the FREE Festival for Water at Civic Center Park, starting at 4pm. Live music featuring the Motet.

And of course, there’s all the First Friday & Second Saturday art festivities. Here is a listing of art openings, courtesy of Denverarts.org: (remember that the museum events are usually NOT free)
