Designer Bag Makeover…New Paint, New Life for a Worn Purse.

I’ve had this beloved Marc Jacobs bag (originally purchased at Neiman Marcus Last Call about 12 years ago) and used it as my main bag for many years. It is still in decent shape (a testament to how very well made it is) though the beautiful magenta color had rubbed off the high traffic areas such as the handle and corners. Because it was looking so worn I’ve had it in storage for a few years, thinking about what to do with it. I knew matching the exact color of leather dye was going to be near impossible, so the idea hit me to just have fun and paint it. Over the holidays I gave myself a gift and did just that. I love how it turned out, as not only have I given my beloved bag new life but it is now an original piece of art as well.

I free-handed the image with a sharpie pen and painted it in acrylic paint. (You could certainly use a stencil or transfer to start your image if you are uncomfortable with that). I also painted ombre’ pinks on the lower part of the worn handles (echoing the peony shades) and matched up the bag’s original color as best I could and rubbed that paint on the other worn areas of the bag that the design did not cover, which turned out quite well. Acrylic paint does great on leather, though if it’s very stiff leather you may need to go over the area with a very fine grit sandpaper first. Darker color leather requires a few layers of paint, and even then the leather color may bleed through light color paint (a bit of pink bled through on some of the white areas on the tiger but I don’t mind it). I really enjoyed this project, it was a nice departure from my very time-consuming oil paintings. I am already planning another project with one of my old leather jackets. Recycling at it’s best! I love the idea of giving new life to well-loved designer bags, and am on the lookout for good candidates for more fun painted bags that I may sell in the future (but this one is just for me :-).

Fall Fabulous Thrifted Fashion, or Yes You CAN Look Great in Clothes from the Thrift Store!

It’s time for a fun fashion post! As my regular readers know, I’m all about the thrifting, and find great designer clothes all the time at the thrift store. This week it’s admittedly not all from the thrift store, just mostly. I’m trying to do more of these little fashion posts so you can see it is actually possible to look great in thrifted clothes! And…how about a fashion blog for the over-40-and-not-a-freaking-size-0 set? Can I get an “Amen”? 🙂

This week we had a post-Thanksgiving outing the the Museum of Contemporary Art for the Mark Mothersbaugh exhibit here in Denver. This is what I wore:

Top: Banana Republic black silk blend 3/4 sleeve turtleneck, $3.99 Goodwill

Jacket: Charcoal gray fitted jean jacket by DKNY, $6.99 Goodwill

Skirt: Leopard print and lace Alberto Makali layered skirt, on sale at Neiman Marcus, $69 (regularly $150) (I’ve had this skirt for 8 years, I wear it often, so quite a bargain!)

Booties: Sam Edelman black suede booties, $7.99, Goodwill.

Jewelry: Acrylic with gold bracelet and gold-tone hoop earrings, $2.99 and $1.99, Goodwill.

Bag: Fuchsia leather Marc Jacobs, $400 (regularly $1200), Neiman Marcus Last Call. OK, this one is not a “great bargain” I admit. It was a special gift I bought myself after selling several paintings, and it was 7 years ago. I still LOVE this bag and use it just about every day. It pays to buy quality! That $400 works out to about $57 a year for the bag so far, and I have no plans to give up this bag any time soon.

Here I am “contemplating the art” (ie: Having a goof), inside the exhibit, which was awesome by the way. If you are in Denver, I highly recommend it.

Find of the Week – July 30, 2013…Marc Jacobs & Tadashi

Find of the Week – Tuesday, July 30, 2013

OK, I confess. I have not been listing a “find” every single week. Sometimes there are no finds, or they are just not worthy of being listed. ( I DO go to the thrift store every week) Perhaps I should change the name. Hmmmm…anyway, here is the “Find of the (almost every) Week”

Yesterday at my favorite Goodwill I found: a very nice Marc by Marc Jacobs leather bag (new retail around $450), and a gorgeous black silk crepe Tadashi Collection dress (new retail around $350) both in excellent, near new condition. Grand Total? $14. Starting to understand why thrifting is so friggin’ awesome? Here they are on my mannequin Tallulah.

I love the Marc Jacobs bag, but green is not my color, so I have listed it for sale on Ebay. Here it is if you’d like to see it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=121152321944  I’m definitely keeping the dress, it fits great 😉

What awesome thrift store finds have you made recently? I’d love to hear about them! Tell me in the “Leave a Reply” section.
