I know, I’ve Been Neglecting You…but here is your First Friday & Awesome Free Events Line-up for September 4-6!

Dearest Fabulous Readers,

I know I’ve been neglecting you of late, and for that I apologize. The main reason is I just returned from that big crazy arts festival in the desert where we burn things, otherwise known as Burning Man. I brought my Black Rock Portrait Project out there once again, and the prep work for that and for the trip itself was hugely time-consuming, among other things. But I’m back! And here with your September First Friday line-up and awesome Free stuff to do this weekend…

My Favorite Pic for the Weekend…Saturday’s TOUR DE FAT Free Freaky Adult Fun in the Park (City Park that is) with live music, games, and bikes bikes bikes. Bike ride registration is at 10am, the fun in the park rolls all day long. See the full schedule HERE.

Saturday is the monthly Free Day at the Denver Art Museum

I know it’s not technically on the weekend, but Monday is a Free Day at the Museum of Nature & Science.

September is a BIG First Friday night in Denver! The Arts Districts will be in full swing tonight. The weather is cool, so break out your favorite Fall sweater and boots and go see some art tonight. Here is the First Friday line-up courtesy of Denverarts.org…

How to Talk to Artists at Art Festivals- The Do’s and Don’ts (Warning: You’ve probably been guilty of at least one of the don’ts…)

How to Talk to Artists at Art Festivals – the Do’s & Don’ts (Warning: You’ve probably been guilty of at least one of the don’ts…)

I visited the Cherry Creek Arts Festival here in Denver today. I go every year. As an artist I was fortunate enough to be chosen to show at this festival (one of the top 3 outdoor art festivals in the country) for 3 consecutive years back in the 2000’s. (I’ve since moved on to strictly gallery exhibits) As I was wandering around enjoying the art, I was struck by the conversations around me, and reminded of the “horror stories” shared by fellow artists (and experienced myself over the many years of doing outdoor shows) about rude and insensitive people, and even well-meaning people who unintentionally insult the artist. On the other side, I see many people who are intimidated by art and feel insecure talking to artists and asking questions. So if you are one of the millions of people visiting an arts festival (or gallery opening, or art walk) this summer, this “How to Talk to Artists” Primer is for you…

One More Day till Friday! Denver First Friday & Other Great Free & Cheap Stuff to do this Weekend…

Ah Thursday. With the weekend just around the corner, I can feel Denver pulses quicken in anticipation…

We have a very rare occasion this month. Second Saturday (June 8th) will arrive directly after First Friday (June 7th), so your art viewing options cover two days in a row! Here are some FREE & CHEAP things to do this weekend:

FRIDAY

On Friday there is a FREE public concert at the Clifford Still Museum downtown featuring ATOMGA (sponsored by Swallow Hill Music) from 5:30pm-7:30pm, and museum admission is FREE 5-8pm! Clifford Still Museum

SATURDAY

My top pick for this weekend is the Art Student’s League of Denver Summer Art Market  on Saturday. I haven’t missed one in a decade now. A marvelous mix of student, faculty, and professional artists selling their wares in a relaxed atmosphere. Looking for new art for your home? There are tons of great art bargains to be had here! (maybe Dad would like a little something cool for Father’s Day, this is the place to get it) Hint: I always arrive right when they open (10am), as parking can get difficult, and it will be a hot day. And of course, it’s FREE! (it is also on Sunday)

If you’re into Bluegrass, the South Pearl Street Brew Grass Festival is for you. It begins at Noon on Saturday. While it is not free, it is only $5 for 8 live bands in a quaint neighborhood setting. http://www.southpearlstreet.com/events.html#music

Also on Saturday is the 9th Annual Downtown Littleton Block Party, another fun FREE event, there’s even fireworks! http://www.downtownlittleton.com/

SUNDAY

On Sunday there’s the FREE Festival for Water at Civic Center Park, starting at 4pm. Live music featuring the Motet.

And of course, there’s all the First Friday & Second Saturday art festivities. Here is a listing of art openings, courtesy of Denverarts.org: (remember that the museum events are usually NOT free)
