Halloween Decor Parts 3 & 4…Outside and Other Spaces

Happy Halloween! I am a bit behind  so I am combining Halloween Decor posts 3 & 4 into 1 post…Outside and Other Spaces.

This year the Crawling Eye is attacking our front porch again, with a few changes. I added the blow-up eyes I had around the yard last year around the eye like “babies”, added a black backdrop (heavy black plastic sheeting with white string lights poked through to resemble stars), 2 wierdo “planets” (a neighbor’s science project they were throwing out that I sprayed with florescent paint), and a new color-changing water-type light that makes it all oh so spooky at night.

We did the rest of the yard and porch a bit more refined this year…

Inside the house, since we go a bit crazy on the main room and entry we like to keep the living room simple with just a few Halloween touches…

Well, simple until you get to the Dia De Los Muertos altar in the kitchen that is 😉

Halloween 2016 Decor Part 2 – the Main Room

Welcome to Halloween Decor 2016 Part 2! The Main Room is our party room, the first room in the house through the entry and the one seen through the front window, and so, it is the room that gets the most attention. Ie: all the coolest Halloween stuff. Just about everything is either diy or found at thrift stores and yard sales.

Above is an admittedly crappily pieced-together panorama of the main room. (hey, photoshop isn’t my strong suit)  (see the Voodoo entry on the right in Part 1) Here are some details:

We found a couple new goodies for this area. The light-up skull and hands is a $5 thrift store find, and we found the clear glass skulls at Ross. The delightful monster art in the red frames is by Travis Louie. Below is our usual vintage collection with a new glittery black skeleton procured at a yard sale for $3.

A couple new thrift store goodies on the table…a “Thing” candle holder and a skull that I painted metallic silver.

halloween2016mainroombarTo give the bar a spooky glow I elevated the Lucite tray on a book and put a string of red lights underneath. The striped candles are simply white candles with black electrical tape wrapped around them. See more of the Halloween DIYs in the Halloween posts from 2014 & 2015.

Next time, Part 3…

Halloween 2016 Decor Part 1 – Voodoo Entry

Happy Halloween! My favorite holiday…I’ll be posting all the fun decor in a 4 part series. Today: The Voodoo Altar! It’s in the entry again, just bigger, badder and more!

I love the voodoo altar this year. We added a few more skulls we found during the year, a bat skeleton from Target ($10) as well as a fun plasma light skull from the thrift store (just $5.99!) The altar is simply a folding table with a side table on top, all draped with sheer black fabric with purple lights underneath. (I’ve been reusing the same fabric for years in different places).

The key items for a good voodoo altar are skulls, bones, bottles, candles, beads and feathers. We added a couple creepy old masks my man made years ago and a real voodoo doll found at the thrift store. The voodoo flags are just printed out at home from a google search for voodoo flags.

Mistress Tia, our resident Voodoo Queen, is an old 1980’s mannequin. I painted her face and dressed her in one of my old handmade Halloween costumes (The amazing leather skulls adorning the headdress and belt and handmade and painted from Artsmyths here in Denver http://www.artsmyths.com http://artsmyths.com/http___www.artsmyths.com/Artsmyths.html

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! Part 2 will be coming tomorrow…

Broken Bones, Tattoos & Marriage. I Have Neglected You, But I Have a Few Good Reasons…

Yes I know. It’s been months and months since I last posted, and I do humbly apologize. It has been a most eventful year so far and other duties and issues were made a priority, but I hath returned! Let’s catch you up…Broken Bones, Tattoos & Marriage!

Broken Bones. In March, right after my birthday, whilst running up wood stairs in socks, (don’t do that. Just don’t.) I fell and broke my foot. Spiral fracture of the 5th metatarsal. Ouch. As you can imagine this put quite a damper on my Spring activities. Thankfully I am now mostly healed.

Tattoos. I began a new career path in July 2015, to add a new creative skill to my artistic arsenal, tattooing. I was very blessed that the great tattoo artist Dave Allen agreed to take me on as his apprentice, and I officially graduated to full-fledged Tattoo Artist in July of this year. I am now working at Preying Mantis Tattoo in Lakewood, CO. (and now accepting appointments!) Here is a small sample of my wares, see more by clicking the “Tattoos” link at www.vlasicstudio.com

And finally, marriage. In August of this year, my love of 10 years and I tied the knot in a sunset ceremony at Burning Man, deep in the Nevada desert. (and yes, I dyed my dress and put pink lights in it. It was Burning Man after all, no ordinary wedding dress would do 🙂

And now, we are (mostly) recovered from our wedding/honeymoon trip, back to work and gearing up for Fall. I am preparing for a big Halloween decorating post later this week, and there will be more goodies to come later this month. Well those are the highlights of the last year-ish. Thanks for hanging in there. I shall endeavor to post more regularly now that all the big stuff is done.
